NASCO Meetings

Atlantic salmon non-governmental organizations were more involved in the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO) meetings in Bar Harbor than ever before, with views well expressed in meetings. At left is Sue Scott of the Atlantic Salmon Federation.

 

ASF-WWF Press Conference

On Mon., June 4, the Atlantic Salmon Federation and World Wildlife Fund co-sponsored a press conference detailing the results of a NASCO review group review that rated Atlantic salmon implementation plans of 18 member governments. Sue Scott (at the podium), and Andy Goode (center) represented ASF and Tom Grasso (right) the World Wildlife Fund.

Richard Warren, Chairman of ASF (US) held an animated conversation with Malcolm Windsor, Secretary to NASCO (right). The venue was a reception co-sponsored by ASF, WWF, the Bangor Daily News and NOAA.

The goal of NASCO is to return salmon runs to health. ASF and WWF have been partnering to support this goal. At a reception held during the conference, Tom Grasso (right) talks with Richard Warren of ASF (center) and Sue Scott of ASF (left).

 

A Welcome to NASCO

Andy Goode, ASF's Vice President of U.S. Programs, welcomed NASCO delegates coming from many countries around the North Atlantic Basin, and wished them well in the deliberations through the week. This was only the second time that NASCO, since its inception in 1983, has met in the U.S.

Chris Poupard, leader of the 20 Non-governmental organizations taking part in NASCO, makes the formal opening address with an overview of the hopes and concerns of these volunteer-driven organizations on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

 

The Mystery of Salmon at Sea

Bud Bird, Canadian commissioner to NASCO and director of the Atlantic Salmon Federation, discusses the Salmon at Sea Initiative (SALSEA) that is focused on solving the mystery of increased marine mortality. He is talking to Jacque Robichaud, who ended his term as Chair of the International Atlantic Salmon Research Board at this meeting.
