COUNTRIES FAIL ATLANTIC SALMON
Overseas, the meetings of the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation
Organization (NASCO) took place this month in Norway.
Sadly, NASCO would
not approve best practices in salmon fisheries management to
which countries could aspire. Bill
Taylor of ASF provides a commentary:

ALEWIVES - FOR HEALTHY SALMON RIVERS
Alewives, a native migratory species, have been blocked for more
than a decade from ascending the St. Croix River by order of
the Maine Legislature. The move was in support of bass outfitters
on the upper lakes, without consideration of the river's health,
or its international status. ASF and our conservation partners
are leading an effort to have the International Joint Commission
rule to restore
alewife passage. Alewives are an
important component in healthy Atlantic salmon rivers.

A guest editorial by Clinton B. Townsend
in the Bangor Daily News gives further insight into the
alewives, the situation in the St. Croix River, and background
to the current situation. There is also a link to the petition
presented to the International Joint Commission.

FISH FRIENDS - BACK TO THE RIVERS
Hundreds of classrooms raising Atlantic salmon from New England
to Labrador released their salmon fry into designated streams
over the past few weeks. Last week it was the turn of Newfoundland
